Laurence Roulleau Berger est sociologue, directrice de recherche émérite au CNRS, directrice de l’IAL "Post-Western Sociology in Europe and in China".
Abstract :
Based on the development of a shared epistemology for more than fifteen years with Chinese sociologists, then with Japanese & Korean sociologists, we have proposed a Post-Western Sociology which aims to offer a common ground for an ongoing dialogue – held on an equal footing – on theories rooted in European & Asian academies. So a Post-Western Sociology is currently producing an ecology of diverse, articulated knowledge from Asia & Europe. which spans a continuum from the Western-West, the non-Western-West, the Western East, the Eastern East, & the re-Easternized East, we can observe, on the one hand, the diversifica on of epistemic autonomies vis-à-vis different Western hegemonies, &, on another hand, epistemic assemblages between European & Asian sociologies. We have shown in a constructed dialogue how "Western" & "non-Western" theories meet, how shared sociological knowledge & situated knowledge cohabit & become embedded. From the crossed perspectives & experiences, we have seen the emergence of continuous & discontinuous continuities between Chinese, Japanese, Korean & French sociologies that open up a transnational space on central issues. Post-Western theory is produced in a pluridimensional & polycentric space, is constructed from connections between knowledge spaces in dialogue & mutual learning. Even Western-Wests are reimagined, even the issue of Western hegemonies continues to be active, we are becoming able to produce a new geography of a plurality of autonomous knowledge & new assemblages of “Western”&“non-Western” knowledge, to improve a methodological cosmospolitanism.
Post-Western sociology invites us to change the globalized hierarchies into social sciences, to come back to the fundamental issue “what is sociology” ?
